Rebecca, who lived in the village of Mercatale, Tuscany, was an avid hiker and rock climber. It is not known what caused his fatal fall.

In a cruel twist of fate, she had bragged about the epic sights she witnessed from the heavy height shortly before the incident.

The experienced outdoorswoman sent photos of the stunning scenery to her mother, Elisabetta.

The devastated mother said she was still tormented by the text exchange she shared with her daughter, unaware that it was some of her last moments.

Elisabetta was sobbing: “She had just returned from an excursion with her boyfriend from the Aosta Valley.

“The trip to the Apuan Alps was the last they had to do.

“She sent me a picture of the mountains and said, ‘Mom, if you could see how beautiful it is from here.

“I pray so much that she didn’t suffer. It still doesn’t feel real to me.”

An inquest into his death is currently underway.

Rebecca regularly quoted the famous proverb of the English poet William Blake: “Great things are done when men and mountains meet.
