As part of its next season, Northern Stage will present a vital new adaptation by Ken Loach I, Daniel Blake from May 26 to June 10, 2023 before the tour.

I, Daniel Blake exposes the reality behind the headlines of the cost of living crisis and was adapted for the stage by actor and comedian Dave Johns who won Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards and Best Newcomer at the EMPIRE Awards for his role in the film, Ken Loach said: “This story is more relevant than ever. And who better to direct it than Dave Johns, the first Daniel Blake?

Dave Johns said: “I was delighted to be asked to adapt Paul Laverty’s screenplay. But I didn’t just want to bring the film to the stage, I wanted to update the story for 2022, make it contemporary, and further explore single mother Katie’s journey and the family unit she forms with Daniel. To show the kindness, compassion, humor and hope that can get us through the toughest times. Unfortunately, during my research, it was disheartening to find that not much had changed since the film’s release. The story is still as relevant as it was in 2016; perhaps even more so now with the cost of living crisis making it even harder for those already struggling to get out of poverty. Daniel and Katie’s story could be anyone’s story.

Designed by Rhys Jarman, with motion direction by Martin Hylton, I, Daniel Blake is a co-production between Northern Stage, Birmingham Rep, Oldham Coliseum, English Touring Theater and Tiny Dragon Productions, in association with Cardboard Citizens who make theater for social change with and for the homeless, and will tour after its premiere in Newcastle; dates will be announced in the new year.

The season also includes a new play by award-winning poet and playwright Hannah Lavery. Demonstration, which plays from April 27 to May 6 before the tour, explores what it takes to make a difference, the power of friendship and the importance of believing in your own voice. Led by Natalie Ibu, artistic director of Northern Stage, three girls prepare to stand up for what they believe in, determined to make a difference despite the prejudices they face and the impending environmental crisis.

Looking forward to the NEXT Christmas, feisty, fun, jolly and with villains you’ll love to hate, new production by Sally Cookson nominated for Olivier Award Cinderella: a fairy tale will play from December 2, 2023 to January 6, 2024, and is a glorious all-girl adventure co-directed by Katy Weir and Jake Smith.

Tickets go on general sale from November 24, with pre-sale tickets available to North Stage members from November 17 and supporters from November 21. For full season information, please click here.
