On Sunday 21 August, English National Opera (ENO) will present a concert of Puccini’s much-loved opera, La bohème, at Fairfield Halls in Croydon, south London.

Each ticket in the 1,802-seat world-class concert hall is priced at £5.

One of the most famous operas of all time, La bohème tells the story of the Parisian poet Rodolfo’s vain love for the seamstress Mimì. This concert will be sung in English as part of ENO’s mission to make opera accessible. With Puccini’s exquisite score, it is a perfect first opera for the public.

ENO Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon said: “It is an honor for us to bring all our strength to Fairfield Halls ahead of Croydon’s historic year as London Borough of Culture. Puccini’s opera is probably one of the most unforgettable love stories in the world, rivaling any Hollywood blockbuster. This stunning concert – sung entirely in English with ENO’s 80-person choir and orchestra – is a fabulous musical feast to enjoy at £5 a ticket for every seat in the house, whether it’s your first or your thirtieth opera.

ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins directs the stunning force of the ENO Orchestra and Chorus to bring Puccini’s romantic score to life. Brabbins has worked with many of the best international and UK orchestras and is a regular at the BBC Proms.

ENO Conductor and Music Director, Martyn Brabbins, says, “Musicians love nothing more than to perform in front of new audiences and share the miraculous and moving music written by Puccini. La bohème is one of the greatest operas, with unparalleled melodic invention, charming characterization and powerful pathos. We are honored to perform for the very first time at the beautiful Fairfield Halls in Croydon.

The role of Mimì is performed by Irish soprano Sinéad Campbell-Wallace, bringing her “rich and powerful soprano” (Irish Independent) to the role. In recent seasons Sinéad has specialized in a fuller dramatic repertoire, with roles including a “beautifully sung” Leonore (The Times) in a new Irish National Opera production of Fidelio, and has recently made a “excellent” ENO (Daily Express) debut in 2022’s La bohème at the London Coliseum.

She is joined on stage by “powerful” Korean tenor (The Stage) David Junghoon Kim. Kim reprises her acclaimed role as Rodolfo after starring in the production of La bohème in the 2021/22 season at the London Coliseum, in 2020 ENO Drive & Live: La bohème – the world’s first fully staged drive-in opera, and recently performed at the first night of the Proms.

The role of Musetta is performed by “brilliant and awe-inspiring” Australian soprano and ENO Harewood artist Alexandra Oomens. Oz[ing] charm and sweet lyricism” (The Times), Oomens recently sang Josephine in HMS Pinafore with the ENO in 2021.

Anglo-French baritone Charles Rice takes over the role of his lover, the tortured artist Marcello. Rice previously performed the role in the 2021/22 ENO season where he “excelled in character and vocal punch” (The i). With an established international career, Rice performs on both opera stages and concert platforms.

British Bass and ENO Harewood Artist William Thomas reprises his role as Hill. Thomas recently “nobly sung” (The Times) the role in the 2021/22 ENO season and in ENO Drive & Live: Bohemianism in the grounds of Alexandra Palace.

Schaunard’s role is sung by British baritone and ENO Harewood artist Alex Otterburn. Otterburn has built a diverse concert repertoire and has been an audience favorite since making his “notable Coliseum debut” (The Daily Telegraph) in 2019’s Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel.

Rounding out the cast is British baritone Simon Butteriss, who “excels in both roles” (The Stage) as Benedict and Alcindoro. Butteriss is behind the role of Benoît in this ENO version of La bohème.

Recently redeveloped, Fairfield Halls hosts arts, entertainment and community events in the heart of Croydon, recently selected as the London Borough of Culture for 2023.

La bohème is on Sunday, August 21, 2022, 4:00 p.m., at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, for a performance.
